History

Spencer Swim Team is one of the largest and most successful masters swimming clubs in Britain. We are based at Putney Leisure Centre, in South-West London, but also train at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace and at the excellent facilities of Dulwich College, West Dulwich.

We are primarily a masters club (over 25's), with a broad range of ages, and are affiliated to the Southern Counties Amateur Swimming Association.

Founded in 1977 by international swimmer John Gordon, the club has become one of the premier clubs in the country with many successes in inter-club, County, National, European and World Championships. While the standard of swimming can be very high (members include former internationals and Olympians) there is a broad range of abilities.

In the autumn of 2007 Spencer Swim Team appointed Kamilla Kozlowska, a highly regarded and experienced professional coach, as our Director of Coaching. She will be overseeing training sessions at Crystal Palace on Tuesday (when it re-opens in summer 2008), Putney on Wednesdays and Dulwich on Saturdays. Kamilla will also be developing a wider training strategy to help the club target the various competitions and meets on the Masters Swimming calendar.

Our other coaches are:

  • Dave Mace, a keen open water swimmer, a former channel swimmer, and an enthusiastic and dedicated coach normally runs Thursday sessions at Crystal palace, to resume in 2008.
  • Irving Dixon (a former county swimmer) now coaches Putney seessions on Saturdays.
  • Diane Rochford, one of Spencer's top competitors as well as an accredited coach, takes Sunday sessions at Putney Leisure Centre, primarily focusing on technical aspects.
  • John Gordon, the club's founder and president, is currently holding sessions at Ernest Bevin College on Thursdays.
